More Rothesay

Another painting of Rothesay for the upcoming exhibition I’m having in the Castle gallery there . This is the first view you get of the town as you prepare to disembark from the ferry . It’s one of the larger paintings I’ll be exhibiting in the show at around 63×26 cm in size .

Kelvingrove Gates

Over the years I’ve painted many pictures of Kelvingrove Park . The gates at the southern end of the park sometimes flood after heavy rain and I’ve always beenĀ  fascinated by the reflections caused by this . This is one of a number of pictures I’ve done , attemptingĀ  to capture the effect . The subject captures in one image many of my painterly interests – reflections , dusk lights and some of Glasgow’s lovely Victorian tenement buildings .

More stripes

Over the last few years I’ve been working on a series of paintings involving stripes and the human body . In many ways , it’s difficult for me to explain exactly what I’m doing with these pieces but they are fundamentally a visual experiment , attempting to define the human form with the stripes . Some of the paintings have almost been portraits but , in this one I’ve used less of the model’s body (just part of the legs ) and tried to make the striped pattern do more of the work . Anyhow …. there’ll be more in the series if I can find models prepared for the indignity of clothing and wrapping themselves in stripes . Acrylic on board – 50x39cm

The Tenement House Museum

‘A visitor to the tenement’ . I’ve been doing paintings of Glasgow tenement closes for over 30 years , but in all that time I’d never visited the city’s Tenement house museum in Garnethill . Well , a few weeks ago I managed to see it for the first time and what a lovely little museum it is .

It’s a little one bedroom flat that was lived in from 1911 until 1965 by Agnes Toward . What’s remarkable though , is that in all that time it remained pretty much unchanged and has remained so ever since. Agnes kept all the original furniture and fittings and didn’t even change the gas lighting to electricity until , I believe the 1960s . A visit to the flat today is truly like a trip back in time to the 19th century .

I chose not to depict the interior but the close is a lovely one , so I thought I’d have a go at painting that and this is the result . Acrylic on board , 30×21 cm
