A visitor to the tenement

‘A visitor to the tenement’ . I’ve been doing paintings of Glasgow tenement closes for over 30 years , but in all that time I’d never visited the city’s Tenement house museum in Garnethill . Well , a few weeks ago I managed to see it for the first time and what a lovely little museum it is .
It’s a little one bedroom flat that was lived in from 1911 until 1965 by Agnes Toward , who worked as a typist . What’s remarkable though , is that in all that time it remained pretty much unchanged and has stayed so ever since. Agnes kept all the original furniture and fittings and didn’t even change the gas lighting to electricity until , I believe the 1960s . A visit to the flat today is truly like a trip back in time to the 19th century .
I chose not to depict the interior but the close is a lovely one , so I thought I’d have a go at painting that and this is the result . Acrylic on board 30x21cm
